Notes on the Atrocities

The President has shown little regard for state coffers as he cuts taxes for the rich folk. Now my home state (Oregon, awash in red ink and hopping mad), is striking back.

At issue is that dandy provision in the most recent tax cut that allows lawyers to deduct the cost of their Hummers. Not only is it one of the most obscene provisions of the tax cuts, but like others, it will affect state revenues. Yesterday, Oregon Democrats cut a deal with Republicans to assess a state tax on those very vehicles.

"The SUV bill would not apply to the farmers, loggers, and construction workers for whom the tax break was originally meant. But all other self employed SUV buyers would get a state tax increase to offset the federal tax cut."

The legislation will only raise $800,000 a year, but it seems like the Oregon Legislature was making a more symbolic move. If the President's going to declare war on the states, Oregon is willing to fight back.

Finally.
